Major Methods of Communication in Africa

A Key and noted to the table below

(1) The total number of telephones for a country is given in 1,000s.

(2) Telephone Sets, T.V. Sets, Radio Sets and copies of newspapers: the figures given are the number of each item per 1,000 of the country's population.

(3) Brdc. Stats. = Radio and T.V. broadcast stations and transmitters.

(4) All Radio and Television Networks (companies) are state controlled or owned, unless they have "i" beside the number meaning 'independent'. The Ivory Coast also has 13 Short Wave Broadcast Stations. The figures given below are for the early 1990s, between 1991-93. The number of telephones, televisions and newspapers are mainly found in urban areas. There is a high density of communications facilities there and very little, as a general rule, in rural areas. The facilities available often depend on how a country has developed its industry, rural areas and tourism etc.
