Former Name French Somaliland, French Territory of the Afars and the Issas (French created it in the first half of the 19th century; expanded to include the shores of the Gulf of Tadjoura and the Somaliland in 1884-85; boundaries of protectorate marked out in 1897; the colony was reorganized to give self-government in 1956-57; French Somaliland opted to join the French community as an overseas territory in referendum of September 1958; name of French Somaliland changed to the French Territory of Afars and Issas in July 1967; vote for independence in referendum of May 1977; and the Republic of Djibouti was established the same year.)
